This position is entitled Lead Level Designer (Game Play) and dedicated to our MMO, Warhammer 40K Dark Millennium Online. Vigil Games is seeking a Lead Level Designer with strong game play design sense, level layout and flow instincts, and a thorough understanding of shooter/MMO RPG group game play dynamics. Experience with pacing and the creation of memorable moments without the reliance upon one-off scripting and working within a system to tap maximum creativity will be the #1 priority for this position. This position also entails in the trenches mentoring and leading by example a team of Level Designers. The Lead Level Designer will also work side by side with the Lead Level Designer (Technical) in an equal and collaborative manner both striving towards the same ultimate goal - maximum game play fun for the player.Core Responsibilities
- Lead the preliminary design (paper) and early blocking out phase of instance locations and exterior game play points of interest.
- Lead/instruct/mentor/drive vision for setting up AI population, game play sequences, and dynamic director events using Vigil’s game building tools.
- Offer creative ideas and suggestions for game environments with a keen eye for detail at every step, especially when such detail amplifies the fun factor on the player and their friends.
- Troubleshoot and iterate on game environments to ensure great play experiences.
- Polish and adjust environments to ensure the product’s critical and commercial success.
- Capture the spirit of the Warhammer 40,000 Dark Millennium Online universe.
Skills & Qualifications
- 6+ years of game industry experience with at least 3 titles shipped with a high emphasis upon level flow, pacing, and shooter combat encounters.
- Experience as a Lead Level Designer ideal but not necessary. This should also be considered an opportunity for a Senior Level Designer to step up.
- Expert understanding of the finer points of game and level design for multiple genres, especially shooters and massively multiplayer games.
- The ability to mentor and inspire younger designers in a positive way.
- Demonstrable success in creating compelling game play, scenarios, activities, and encounters for games shipped of either PC or Console markets.
- Superb verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to visualize and bring to fruition game environments using various tools and technology.
- Scripting experience a plus (either visual or code)
- An avid gamer with a passion for both MMOs and or Shooters a must with a strong point of reference for these genres.
